3.3.09 - Today's class assignment and work

How about that assembly yesterday? Did Olga leave an impression on you? This lesson is intended to give you some more of what Olga was saying, and it's also an opportunity to compare images of women in historical advertisements with those of today.

Let's start.

1. Watch this clip:

http://www.mediaed.org/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=206
2. Then, working in small groups, research images of women in advertising, both historically and currently. Each group should attend to the following questions:

What roles do woman playing in the ads?
What can one conclude about the daily lives of woman in the ads?
What can one conclude about the state of mind of women in the ads?
What can one conclude about society’s views of women from the ads?
What can one conclude about the value placed on women from the ads?
Have society’s values and views about women changed much over the years?
What other questions can be raised about the images of women in advertising?
Have students keep careful notes of their observations and discussions.

Use this link to start your research:
http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/adaccess/browse/

3. When the research is complete, post your answers as a comment and come back to discuss your findings. What conclusions can you draw from your research? What does contemporary pop culture, as expressed in advertisements, have to say about women? What other examples can you give? (e.g., from music, movies, television, etc.)

Links to videos of Empire State Building Run-Up

As stated in the MPH IceBox, here are two fun videos that show me during the Empire State Run-Up. I am in the White Visor (though not really an important item to wear in the stairwell, I always wear a hat or a visor when running...) YOu may have to paste them in the browser as the links don't always work.

Part 3 - Prop 8. Good or bad?

So in the wake of Prop 8, Milk was created. What is prop 8? Does it matter to you? Why did it get passed? in what state? Post your answers?

Mr E

Class part 2 - 2.23.09

By now, you see Sean Penn is your winner. Now, what was the role he was playing? What was the man's name? Why was he important? Here is a little something from an interview with the director, Gus Van Zant:

With the Prop 8 decision that rescinded gay marriage in California in November 2008, the gay movement has become a new issue for civil rights advocates. Can this movie charge reaction and stimulate a response that it might get people to be more conscious of the issues that are well defined in the film?

GVS: Yeah, especially now with Prop 8 and the reactions to Prop 8. It's mobilized and brought together the gay community--particularly, the younger gay community. It's their time now and they have taken to the streets. I think there was an interview by a gay writer in Los Angeles, and who had been to the first rally that was a response to Prop 8 decision in Los Angeles.

He went to the West Hollywood gathering, and there was a speaker, and, to his surprise, everyone walked away and walked up the street to Sunset. He had been to many rallies in West Hollywood, this had never happened before. I think there's a new energy that's inspiring.

Our film is about a new energy of a different time--a sexual liberation from the '60s that developed in people who had found their gay sexuality and banded together in the Castro, which had a lot of young energy of that time. [It's also about] the nuts and bolts of the political strategies that are hugely informative in the movie--and mostly inspiring. When it plays in theaters, it definitely plays into that gay civil rights energy of today.

So this guy was important to make a movie about. In your view, using sources, is this movie a product of today's culture? Could this movie have come out 20 years ago? Explain.

2/23 Today's class

The Oscar's were last night. Did you watch? Well, let's recap. Today you need to do this:

Who won best actor?

Was this his first Oscar?

What was the reaction from the press (find two sources)

Put this all in our blog!

Why is Nike so dominant?

Start your Mac up. Go to You Tube. Search for "Nike Soul Commercial." Do not play until I say so.

Friday, 2/6: what we are doing today

So some of you have told me that up to 50 kids have taken your survey. Well done! This is what you will do today:

1. Look at your results? What do they say?

2. Put your results in our blog. Share with everyone what you found out.

3. Come up with a conclusion. Do we know what's cool? Do teens create cool? Can we tell?

When we are finished you will be asked to read and discuss this:

http://www.nytimes.com/indexes/2008/08/17/style/t/index.html#pagewanted=4&pageName=17tween&

See ya,

Mr. E

How do you get your survey out there?

Now that the surveys are built, how will you get people to take it? You need to think of each of your groups as competing marketing companies looking for information. Be creative in how you get your survey out there - post signs, email links, put the link on the blog, announce at lunch - it is up to you. So get going!
